Incredible Edible North Hampshire has secured a grant through Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council to fund the creation of a Community Orchard in the Basingstoke War Memorial Park, as recently featured in the Basingstoke Gazette.
The Community Orchard is being planted right in the heart of the town, and come harvest time will provide a rich selection of freshly-picked fruit for the benefit of the local community every year.
With food-growing, nutition and cooking going back into the national curiculum for key stages 1 tough 3 the Community Orchard will present an excellent source of project ideas for local schools and colleges, with opportunities for art & design students. Smartphone QR codes will be included on the information boards and tree tags which will link to websites with an abundance of useful information on soil, trees, fruit, bees, harvesting, preserving, nutrition, cooking, and so on.
***UPDATE*** Due to the recent bad weather interrupting efforts to get the trees in the ground, the orchard planting has been re-scheduled to Saturday March 30th, from 1pm to 4pm.
If you would like to attend on the day or are able to help out in any other way please contact Bob on 07909 541145, or drop him an email at boblegg1066[a]gmail.com.
